Millwork Recruiting Source is proud to lead the search for a Production Manager on behalf of a premier custom architectural millwork client located in the vibrant city of Birmingham, AL. This well-established company, with over 30 years of experience in delivering high-end millwork solutions, is seeking a dedicated and dynamic leader to join their team. The role has opened due to an upcoming retirement, and we are looking for someone to take the reins, fostering a culture of mentorship, collaboration, and operational excellence. Position Overview:
As the Production Manager, you will lead a team of up to 15 (mill, benchmen, and finishing) within a 50,000 sq. ft. shop, working closely with various departments, including project management, engineering, and owner/operations, to ensure smooth production flow. Your role will require a 40 to 50-hour (50 when work ramps up) workweek, during which you will motivate the team, foster pride in their work, and create a positive, productive atmosphere. The company utilizes a range of software to streamline work orders, CNC operations, drafting, and engineering, including Trade Soft, Project Pak, Shop Pak, AutoCAD, Microvellum, Inventor, and Router CIM. Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily shop operations, including:
- Production
- Quality control
- Safety program
- Employee training, mentorship, and development
- Machine and building maintenance
- Hire, train, and cultivate a high-performing, cohesive team.
- Implement strategies for process improvements, identifying areas for enhanced efficiency and quality.
- Ensure a safe, organized, and compliant work environment.
- Maintain and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) across departments.
- Open and close the shop daily.
- Communicate regularly with project managers to align production schedules and priorities.
- Provide insights on shop drawings, construction techniques, and job planning.
- Oversee the delegation of tasks within the shop to ensure efficient workflow.
- Ensure production meets quality, safety, and timeline expectations.
- Conduct regular quality control checks at various phases of production.
- Review shop drawings and inspect completed work for adherence to job specifications and standards.
- Monitor labor hours and verify timesheets for accuracy.
Requirements:
- Prior shop management experience (5+ years) within a custom architectural millwork environment is essential.
- Demonstrated work habits that set a positive example for the team.
- Commitment to fostering a culture of continuous improvement and learning.
- Ability to create a professional work environment that engages and motivates employees.
- Expertise in cabinetmaking, woodworking, and related processes, including melamine, veneer, laminates, glue, and dowel assembly.
- Knowledge of wood shop equipment, including CNC machinery and traditional tools.
- Experience with staining and finishing architectural woodwork.
- Familiarity with AWI/QCP quality standards and the ability to ensure compliance.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Proven track record of working effectively under pressure and meeting tight deadlines.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail.
